Why Hemp?

SKIP THE INTRO

A Hemp crop produces nearly 4 (four) times as much raw fibre as an equivalent-sized tree plantation.

Trees take around 20 years to mature.  Hemp takes 4 months.

A crop of hemp requires no application of herbicides. With a density of 200 to 300 plants per square meter, there is no available room or light for weeds to grow.

The hemp plant also has no need for pesticides. It has no known insect enemies and is also highly resistant to disease.

Hemp slows the depletion of the ozone layer as hemp will burn clean and maintains the earth's natural atmospheric balance.

Hemp is a rapid growth, easily sustainable crop with low maintenance costs and thousands of possible uses,

Hemp in Fashion

Fashion designers Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein have climbed aboard the hemp bandwagon. Lauren disclosed that he secretly used hemp fabric in his clothing as far back as his safari-inspired fall '84 collections. Klein used hemp for decorative pillows and other items in his '99 home collection and has announced plans to use hemp in his clothing lines.

Hemp's appeal for the fashion industry is twofold. First and foremost are the fibres intrinsic qualities: stronger than cotton, warmer than linen, more absorbent than nylon. But in addition, hemp is environmentally friendly.

Why Tilley Hemp?

Tilley Hemp is strong and resilient with a soft linen-like feel, constructed of 67% Hemp and 33% environmentally friendly, recycled polyester. Being a hemp blend the colours will fade overtime, like a well-worn pair of jeans.

This fabric has been tested and certified as providing "good ultraviolet protection" with a UPF rating of 20. For more information on sun protection and the fabric
